Alberta Denise Jackson Freeman, the widow of Ulysses Freeman, transitioned into eternal rest Monday, September 9, 2024 at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News, Virginia.
She was born in Edgefield County to the late Odell and Ruby Talbert Jackson. She received Christ at an early age and was baptized at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she served until she moved her membership to join her husband at Springfield Baptist Church. She was a faithful and devoted member of Springfield Baptist Church where she served in many ministries, such as Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School Director and teacher, Bible Study teacher, Church Financial Secretary, Deaconess, Ministerial Staff, and Springfield Senior Choir member. She was initiated into the Gamma Xi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. at St. Augustine’s College in 1963. As a Life Member and Golden Soror, Alberta served in various roles for the Iota Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. For example, she served as the chapter’s treasurer, financial secretary, Scholarship Committee Chair, and a member of the Graduate Advisory Council and Hospitality Committee. Alberta loved God, her family and friends, her church, education, and her AKA! She was known for her stylish dressing as well as her sweet, loving, outgoing personality. She always had to be “in the know” and was notorious for initiating introductions when she saw a new face amongst familiar ones.
She graduated from Edgefield County Colored School in 1960. She earned an Associate’s Degree from Voorhees College, a Bachelor’s Degree from St. Augustine’s College, and a Master’s Degree from Clemson University. She also completed additional coursework beyond her Master’s Degree. Professionally, she spent over 30 years as an educator, prior to retiring from Greenwood School District 52 (Ninety Six Public Schools) as a second grade teacher. After retiring, she served as a Bailiff in McCormick and Edgefield Counties. Alberta was very proud to have participated in the Raleigh, North Carolina Woolworth’s lunch counter Sit-In during the Civil Rights Movement. After the Civil Rights Act was passed, she was one of the first Black teachers to integrate all-White schools.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her stepmother, Izetta Holmes Jackson.
She leaves to cherish and honor her precious memories: son, Terence (Francine) Freeman of Lake Wylie, SC; daughters, Dr. Tonjua Freeman, Columbia, SC and Tamiya (Charles) Fisher of Virgnia Beach, VA; bonus son, Clayton (Jonetta) Dorn of Wake Forest, NC; bonus daughter, Gwendolyn (Ricky) Chiles of McCormick, SC; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Nellie (Willie Haywood) Bussey of Edgefield, SC and Ozell (Michael) Richardson of Beaufort, SC; sister-in-law, Brenda (Charles) Freeman-Behlin of Trenton, SC; aunts, Ruth Gordon of Edgefield, SC and Willie Lee (Charles) Wilson of Washington, DC and many other special nephews, nieces, other relatives, sorors, and friends.
The family is at their respective homes.
