Annie Mae Abney Matthews
Saluda, SC: Annie Mae Abney Matthews, 95, of 257 Graham Street, entered into eternal rest on, Wednesday night, May 26, 2021 at her home, after declining health.
She was born in Saluda, SC, on February 11, 1926, daughter of the late John Henry and Winnie Wallace Abney. She received her education in the public schools of Saluda, SC.
At an early age, she joined the Wateree AME Church and after she married to George F. Matthews she moved her membership to Phillipi Baptist Church where she was a faithful member. She served as Mother of the Church, a member of the Senior Choir and once served as a Usher. She was also secretary of WHAS #41 for many years.
Annie Mae's work history began with farming, later she was the cook for Winn's Restaurant for many years and then a cook at Saluda Nursing Center until she retired. Oh yes she was a goood cook. She was the married to George Frank Matthews who preceded her in death and mother of seventeen children (three children, Danny Matthews, Gloria Smith and Winnie Abney and her seven siblings also preceded her in death. She was the last survivor of her immediate family.
She leaves to cherish and honor her memory; sons George W. Matthews, Mt. Rainer, MD, Lafette Matthews, Wimauma, FLA, Jessie (Wilhemenia) Coleman, Nathaniel (Lillie Ruth) Matthews, Bennie C. Matthews, Ronnie Matthews and John Oscar Matthews all of Saluda, SC; daughters, Edna Mae Coleman and Ella Marie Lindsay both of Washington, DC; Genell Attaway of Missouri City, TX, Lambert (Albert) Kinard, Saluda, SC, Tommie (Edwin) Garrett, Irmo, SC, Alice Cannon, Leesville, SC and Vanessa Matthews, Newberry, SC; 49 grandchildren, 89 great grands, 55 great-great grands and 2 great-great-great grands; nieces, nephews, other relatives and sorrowing friends.
The family is at the home.
