Brooklyn, NY: Barbara Jean Coleman departed this life on June 6, 2017.
She was born in Washington, DC, daughter of the late Otis and Julia Norris Coleman. She migrated to Brooklyn, NY at an early age.
She attended public school and later worked her way through college the Fashion Institute of Technology where she earned a BA. She worked for numerous fashion houses on the Seventh Avenue and Broadway as an assistant Designer and Patter Maker. She also loved fashion especially hats, she became known as the hat lady.
Barbara liked to travel and cook. Her specialty was lasagna. Barbara joined Duryea Presbyterian Church and was member for over 30 years, during those years she became a Deacon and later on she began to train the new Deacon. She was an active woman in all phases of the church including organizing the flag rally and other activities until she became at an early age.
She will be remembered as a generous, kindhearted woman, always looking out for others. She will be missed.
She was preceded in death by mother Julia Coleman and brother, James Coleman.
She leaves to cherish her memory; sisters, Mazie Coleman of Brooklyn, NY and Mary Alice Trayhnman of North Carolina; brothers, Calvin Coleman and Denard Coleman of North Carolina; six nieces, and one nephew; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, 6/14/17 at the Young Mt. Zion Baptist Church conducted by Reverend Robert Livingston. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
