Mrs. Bertha Mae Hammonds
Mrs. Bertha Mae Attaway Hammonds daughter of the late MC and Minnie Mae Watson Attaway was born in Washington, DC, on November 7, 1955. She transitioned from this life into eternal rest Sunday, May 24, 2020 at her home, after declining health.
At an early age, she joined the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church.
She received her education in the public schools of Saluda County, SC where she graduated from Ridge Hill High School in 1974. She was a hard worker. She worked at Riegel's for many years. Later she found employment at Kimberly Clark and last and present employed by Saluda Nursing Center. She was a member of the Woman's Home Aide Society No. 41.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her sister, Ida Mae Attaway Nicholson.
She leaves to honor and cherish her fond memories; her husband, George Hammonds of the home; son, Abram Hammonds of Johnston, SC; daughters, Teresa Attaway (Eddie) Lee of Johnston, SC, Minnie Attaway of Aiken, SC, and Fannie Hammonds of Johnston, SC; stepsons, Ricardo Hill (Jessica), North Augusta, SC, Travis Campbell, Johnston, SC and Leonard Abney, Greenwood, SC; step-daughters, Shawn (Dewey) Macgargle, Charleston, SC, Chanta (Brian) Talbert Aiken, SC and Marcia Davis, Augusta, GA; twenty-one grandchildren; three brothers, Morris Carlton Attaway, Houston, TX, Dexter Attaway, Johnston, SC and John Atttaway, Texas; Pernell (Vera) Hammonds (like a brother), Ridge Spring, SC; one uncle, Robert Attaway, Rock Hill, SC; two aunts Annie P. Watson, Saluda, SC and Willette Attaway, Philadelphia, PA; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and sorrowing friends who will miss her dearly.
A Graveside Service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, 5/30/20 at Sunset Memorial Garden, Edgefield, SC conducted by Pastor Damiean Bryant.
Viewing will be Friday at the funeral home 1-7 p.m.
The family is at the home her daughter, Teresa A. (Eddie) Lee, 333 Bledsoe Road, Johnston, SC.
