Mrs. Betty Doris Spurgeon
Columbia, SC: Mrs. Betty Doris Herbert Spurgeon of 2345 Barhamville Road, the wife of Thomas Spurgeon, peacefully went home to be with the Lord, Sunday morning, November 15, 2020 at her home.
She was born in Saluda County, SC September 13, 1950, daughter of the late Reverend Isaiah and Willie Mildred Wells Herbert. She was a graduate of C A Johnson High School and the University of South Carolina with a degree in Education. She taught in Greenwood School District and Richland County where she retired and was presently serving as a part-time Instructor for Adult Education. At an early age, she joined Wateree AME Church and presently she was a faithful member of Bishops Memorial AME Church and president of WHAS #115.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, Isaiah Barnett Herbert.
She is survived by her husband, Thomas E. Spurgeon of the home; sons, Paul (Tunya) Herbert of Columbia, SC and Anthony W. Herbert of Charlotte, NC; daughters, Rosetta Spurgeon of Columbia, SC and Reverend J. Senay Spurgeon of Greenville, SC; seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren; sisters, Mildred Alfreda Herbert, Mary Alma (Juan) Centero-Herbert, Brenda Joyce Fripp and Felita Z. Herbert all of Columbia, SC and Joe Ann (Jack) Gentry of Charlotte, NC; one aunt, Bessie Wells of Saluda, SC; six sisters-in-law, seven brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and sorrowing friends.
A Graveside Service celebrating her life will be 11 a.m. Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Wateree AME Church Cemetery.
Family viewing will be 1-2 p.m. and public viewing will be 2-7 p.m. Wednesday, 11/18/20 at the funeral home.
