Deacon Albert Perry Obituary

Deacon Albert Perry, at age 89, transitioned into his eternal rest on Tuesday, August 23, 2022.  On November 15, 1932 in Batesburg, SC, he was born to the late Johnnie and Rosella Boyd Perry, and was the youngest of nine children. At an early age, his faith journey began when he joined Wesley Chapel CME Church and served in several capacities. He graduated from Twin-City High School in 1951, and afterwards was soon drafted into the United States Army where he served in the Korean War from 1953-1955. He was a transporter in the US Army and took his driving responsibilities very serious. However, his romantic side kept the US mail service busy writing love letters to his soon-to-be bride, Mamie Lee Valentine whom he later married on July 14, 1956. They were blessed with three beautiful children, Glenda Yvette, Beverly Anita and Vincent Maurice and enjoyed 66 amazing years together.

After marriage, he moved to Saluda and later joined  Pleasant Hill Baptist Church where he was baptized.  He was ordained as a Deacon in 1970 and later served as Chairman for 20 years. He also served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years and was a member of the Senior Gospel Choir (Chaplain) and the Male Chorus.  He was a member of the Peerless Lodge No. 214 where he was a Tyler. He was a Milliken retiree after giving 30 years of dedicated service.

Deacon Perry was a one-of-a-kind husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and uncle. He always provided for his family with love and affection.  He thought the world of his family, and his greatest joy was spending time with them.  He loved dining out, family events, traveling, gardening and often telling a joke or two. He and his wife would always find time to take vacations, short trips and in later years enjoyed “date-night” every Friday. He was given a God-given talent of playing the piano by ear and loved playing for his church and as a past time at home.  His determination to tackle technology grew as he tinkered with his computer and smart phone almost daily. Pandora was his favorite music APP and he learned how to search for and listen to his favorite gospel songs on the computer.

He was the youngest of nine children and was preceded in death by five brothers, Elex, William, Richard, Rufus and Johnnie and two sisters, Ethel and Cora. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Mamie L. Perry; daughter, Glenda (Michael) Coleman, Beverly Springs, and Vincent (Anglia) Perry; seven grandchildren, Ashley, Kayla, Brandon, Kristen, Nicholas, Thaddeus and Kyndall, and seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Rosie L. Harris of New York; three sisters-in-law, Rosie M. Perry, Doris Mincey and Hattie Perry; Special “double nephew and niece” is Rufus Everette Perry and Shelby (Cornell) Sweeney, a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
