Earnest Coates

Saluda, SC:  Earnest Coates, 65, of 324 South Main St, passed away on Monday, October 18, 2021 at his home.

He was born in Edgefield County, SC, son of Hattie Jones Coates and the late Claude Coates, Jr., on March 7, 1956. 

He received his education in the public schools of Edgefield County, South Carolina where he graduated from Strom Thurmond High School in 1974. He served his country in the US Army. He worked as a truckdriver most of his working life. He was a member of Willow Spring Baptist Church and the Men Aide Society.

In addition to his father, he was also preceded in death by, a son, Shaquille Coates; two brothers, Robert Coates and Bobby Coates.

Leaving to cherish and honor his memory: his mother, Hattie J. Coates of Edgefield, SC; two sons, Gerard (Arshiko) Brown of Louisiana and Dominick Coates of Greenwood, SC; step-daughter, Monifa Thomas (caretaker) of Saluda, SC; five grandchildren; sisters, Shirley Coates (Willie) of Aiken, SC, Rosetta Williams and Jessie Coleman both of Edgefield, SC: brothers, Edward Coates, Claude Coates, III and Richard Coates (Miranda) both of Edgefield, SC, Freddie Coates of Columbia, SC, James (Ida) Coates and George Coates both of Saluda, SC and Thomas Coates of Johnston, SC; sister-in-law, Marva H. Coates of Columbia, SC; two aunts, Shirley Moore of Edgefield, SC and Queenie Copeland of Ridge Spring, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and sorrowing friends.

A Celebration of his life will b 2 p.m. Sunday, October 24, 2021 at Willow Spring Baptist Church.

Viewing will be Saturday 10/23/21 1-6 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family is at the home.
