Mr. John Lewis Butler, Sr.

Mr. John Lewis Butler, Sr, 99, of 3031 W 25th St, the widower of Mattie Lee Culbreath Butler entered into eternal rest on January 22, 2022, at his home.

He was born in Saluda, SC, February 22, 1922, son of the late Earnest and Cora Goudy Butler. He was a former member of Young Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He lived in New York most of his life and he was a retired Custodian Engineer.

In addition to his parents and wife, he is also preceded in death by his son, John Lewis (Ernie) Butler, Jr. and siblings; Isaac Butler, Emory Butler Ludnie (Lubbie) Butler, Ervin Butler, Frank Jesse Butler, Louise Culbreath, Bessie Wallace, Ida Washington and  Naomi Goode.

John Butler was a amazing respectful loving person. John enjoyed his music, his favorite song is hole in the wall he also love fishing and spending time with his family. John was a very proud and independent man who refuse to take help from anyone even in his last years he was still very independent, he would drive his car and go grocery shopping for himself .He was not only our grandfather but he was a grandfather to many of our friends. He will be missed but forever remembered he was the head and the backbone of the family; a mentor to us all.

John Lewis is the last survivor of his immediate family.

He leaves to honor and cherish his legacy; daughter, Joan B. Smith of Brooklyn, NY; one son ,Joseph Holly of Brooklyn NY; seven grandchildren, Clifford, Dionne, Darnell, Coszett, Pinky, Shawan and Justin; thirteen great grandchildren, twelve great-great grandchildren; son-in-law, Early Smith; two grandsons-in-law, one granddaughter-in-law; five sisters-in-law, one brother-in-law; nieces, nephews, other relatives and sorrowing friends.

Graveside Service will be 12 Noon  Saturday, February 5, 2022 at Young Mt. Zion Baptist Church conducted by Reverend Carl Chiles. 

The body will be at the church at 11 a.m.

Viewing will be Friday 4-6 p.m.at the funeral home.
