John Lewis Smith, Sr.

Ward, SC: .On May 16, 2022, John Lewis Smith, Sr. went home into the loving arms of our Lord.  He was born on January 3, 1955, in Warthen, GA, to the late John Smith Jr., and Frances Cheeley Smith.

He attended Glenn Hills High School in Augusta, GA.  He worked for and was a  employee of the Savannah River Plant in Aiken, SC, for a number of years.  He attended St. Paul Baptist Church, in Lexington, SC.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Dennis Smith, a son, John L. Smith Jr., and Willie Harris, Jr., who he grew up with as a sibling.

He is survived by a loving spouse, Ruth Williams Smith of Ward, SC; a son, John Lewis Smith Jr., Augusta, GA, and two stepdaughters, Keshia Boynton, Columbia, SC, and Erica Jones, Ward, SC, and Deydreeon Gilchrist of Augusta, GA, who he raised and loved as a daughter; and six siblings: Mary (Ron) Oliver, Mamie Smith, Teresa (Robert) Smith, all of Augusta, Georgia, Barry Smith, of Indiana, Diane Joyner of Indiana, Prendy (James) NeSmith of Alabama; William Walker of Atlanta, Ga, One living aunt Mary Veasley or Warthen, Ga and five others who he grew up with as siblings in a blended family: Diane (Pee Wee) Harris of Florida, Charlie Harris of Florida, Fannie Harris, Joann Harris, Robert Harris, all of Augusta, GA; and five grandchildren; and four brother-in-laws: Tommie (Evangeline) Williams, Jr., Ward, SC, Willie James (Annie Ruth) Williams, Trenton, SC, Ernest (Renee) Williams, Columbia, SC, and Donald Williams, Johnston, SC; and three sisters-in-law; Naomi Smith, Doris Williams (Bobby) McNeely, Snellville, GA, and Lesa (Kevin) Jones, Suitland, Maryland; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

He was an avid mechanic, motorcycle rider, and fisherman. He loved to watch wrestling and football.  His favorite football team was the Atlanta Falcons.  He was known for his generosity with his family and in the community.  He will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 21, 2022 at Sunset Gardens Memorial Cemetery,  1339 Columbia Road, Johnston, SC  29832 conducted by Reverend Dr. Walter Butler. Viewing will be 1-2 p.m. at the cemetery.

Viewing will be Friday 2-6 p.m. at the funeral home.

The family is at the home.
