Martha Kate Freeman Gordon
Edgefield, SC: Martha Kate Freeman Gordon, 88, passed away peacefully on Wednesday afternoon, May 26, 2021 at Saluda Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center in Saluda, South Carolina.
Born in Edgefield County, she was the daughter of the late William ‘Bill’ and Tencie Brunson Freeman. Martha love the Lord and accepted Christ at an early age. She was a member of the Springfield Baptist Church and educated in Edgefield County Schools.
In 1952, she met Franklin D. Gordon, Sr. and they were married on May 16, 1954. She then moved her membership to Pleasant Lane Baptist Church where she served on Gospel Choir, taught Sunday School, and served in the Deaconess Ministry and Burial Aid Society.
After becoming a wife and mother, her favorite thing to do was to cook for her family. She loved for people to come by her house. She didn’t care if it was morning or night, she always had food cooked and ready to go. As her children started growing up, she decided she would go to work and worked for Knight Manufacturing Plant in Saluda, SC from 1970 to 1977. In 1977, she decided to retire for good and help her children raise their children. It was a never a time when she didn’t have one of her grandchildren.
She always said ‘Thank Jesus’ for letting her be alive to see her grandchildren and enjoy them. They were the joy in her life. Even though they all had names, she calls them all ‘Baby’!
She is preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Johnny B. Harrison, Robert Fred Freeman and Joe David Freeman; and two sisters, Berdina Freeman Felder and Jessie Ruth Manley.
She is survived by her husband, Franklin D. Gordon of Saluda Nursing Center; Sr.; daughter, Syneta (James) Powell of North Augusta, SC; three sons, Franklin D. (Dolores) Gordon, Jr., Bruce (Brenda) Gordon; and Leon (Louvenia) Gordon all of Edgefield, SC; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a brother, Truman Freeman, and a sister Claudine Freeman, both of Columbia, SC; four sisters-in-law, Frankie Freeman and Lou Gordon of Edgefield, SC, Katrina Brown, Silver Springs, MD and Ethel Long, Jersey City, NJ; three brothers-in-law, Moses Felder and Virgil Manley, both of Columbia, SC and Minister Ronnie Gordon, Edgefield, SC; and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family is at the home.
