Edgefield, SC: Mr. Norman Dorn son of the late Gilbert and Stella Youngblood Dorn was born in Edgefield, South Carolina May 4, 1933. He transitioned from this earthly life into eternal rest Thursday night, October 8, 2020 at University Hospital, Augusta, GA.
He was the last survivor of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Wilbert Dorn, Ruben Oliphant, and Jonell Dorn.
At an early age, he joined the Rosa Hill Baptist Church where he was a faithful member serving in many capacities. He loved the Lord and he sought to please Him in his deeds, works and actions. He loved gospel music and his favorite Gospel Group was the Mighty Clouds of Joy.
He received his formal education in the public schools of Edgefield County where he was a high school graduate. He furthered his education at South Carolina State College where he received a Bachelor's Degree in Education. He taught in Edgefield County Public Schools for forty-seven years. He was a longtime coach for the Girls’ Basketball team and served as a referee for high school basketball and football games. He also refereed for Softball Teams in the surround areas. He was a veteran of the US Army.
He was married to Elizabeth Howze Dorn and to this union two sons were born.
His civic and community involvement, included being an active member of NAACP and the Democratic Party of SC. He was a trailblazer in the 60's during segregation and assisted registering blacks to become registered to vote. Norman proudly served on the Edgefield County Council for more than twenty-five years. During his tenure he was instrumental in helping the black communities to get funding for Recreation Parks in their communities.
Leaving to cherish and honor his memory; his wife, Elizabeth Howze Dorn of Columbia, SC; sons, Norman Vann Dorn of Irmo, SC and Cyrus Nelson and wife, Tenecka Dorn of Edgefield, SC; granddaughter, Ashtyn Ryan Dorn (whom he adored) of Edgefield, SC; sisters-in-law, Annie Howze of Edgmor, SC, Rose Howze and Mary D. Dantzler both of Charlotte, NC; nephew, Gilbert Oliphant of North Augusta, SC; first cousin, James Anderson of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; and a host of other relatives, the county and sorrowing friends who will miss him dearly
Graveside Service to honor his Life will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, 10/13/20 at Shaw's Creek Baptist Church conducted by Reverend Frank Nicholson - presiding, Reverend Willie Patten - Eulogist and others assisting.
Viewing will be 1-7 p.m. Monday, 10/12/20 at the funeral home
