Mrs. Pauline Gilchrist Settles Johnson

Edgefield, SC: Mrs. Pauline Gilchrist Settles Johnson, 88, of Edgefield, South Carolina, transitioned to her heavenly home on March 4, 2021 at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia.

Pauline was born on February 13, 1933 to the late Sam and Eliza Gilchrist. She received her education in the public schools of Edgefield County. At an early age she joined the Liberty Spring Baptist Church in McCormick, SC. She married the late Clinton Leroy Settles (Sonny) at age eighteen on February 22, 1951 and to their union ten children was born. Pauline was predeceased by seven of her children. Pauline and Sonny moved to Washington, D. C. in 1963. She worked for the Mount Joy Baptist Church as a school bus driver and retired after 33years of service.

Pauline married the late Thomas Johnson on July 5, 1978. Pauline returned to South Carolina in 2009 and rejoined her fellowship with the Liberty Spring Baptist Church where she was a faithful member. Pauline was a classy and stylish woman with a humble and sweet spirit. She was also an excellent cook.

Pauline leaves to cherish her memory: a loving and devoted daughter Eartha Settles (affectionately known as Betty), two sons Ricky Settles and Bruce Settles both of Washington, D.C.  twelve grandchildren. Her oldest grandchildren are Larry Settles, Theodora Settles, Sylvester Settles, Theodore Brown, Tarik Settles, Tarisha Settles, Rashad Settles (predeceased), Marquett Settles, Sharice Settles and Williams Cox, all of Washington, D.C.

Pauline was predeceased by twelve siblings. She is survived by two sisters, Maggie (Wilbur) Gordon of Edgefield, SC and Geneva Herring, McCormick, SC, devoted nephew, David Gilchirst of McCormick, SC and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins and sorrowing friends.
