Saluda, SC: Rex Kenneth Abney, 68, of 1707 Pine Grove Road, the husband of Shawn Butler Abney, departed this life on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at his home.
He was born in Saluda, SC, October 11, 1957, son of the late John D. Abney, Sr. and the late Ruby Lee Bosket Abney. He was a faithful member of Mt. Moses CME Church where he served as Trustee, Usher, Sunday School Teacher, Men Ministry, and assistant Secretary. He graduated from Saluda High School in 1977 where he played basketball and they won the State Championship in 1977 and Rex was the President and Valedictorian of his class. He furthered his education at Benedict College where he graduated in 1981 with a Degree in Engineering. Rex was a Notary Public, DJJ Arbitrator and member of the Disaster Relief Team. He was employed by Saluda County Roads and Bridges as a Foreman and he was the manager of Dazzle Car Wash. He was a diehard Redskins (Commanders) fan. Rex was truly a family man and a man with a lots of knowledge and he will be missed dearly by his family and the Community.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Johnny Lee Bosket and father-in-law, Johnny Paul Christie
Leaving to honor and cherish his life and legacy; his wife, Shawn Butler Abney of the home whom he took very good care of her; sons, Melvin (Soleil) Sanders of Chapin, SC and Tremaine Young of Saluda, SC; daughter, Sherelle Abney of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren, Jace, Christopher and Ryleigh; brothers, Paul (Christine) Abney of Saluda, SC, Cleveland Abney of Lexington, SC, John D. (Denise) Abney, Jr. of Philadelphia, PA; sisters, Catherine Abney of Saluda, SC, Wenda Delois Gilliam of Philadelphia, PA and Margaret (Joe) Johnson of Vista, CA; mother-in-law, Nellie R. Christie of Saluda, SC (the son she never had); one aunt, Nita Bosket of Philadelphia, PA; sisters-in-law, Sharon (Tyror) Mendenhall of Irmo, SC and Earnestine Bates of Charlotte, NC; brother-in-law, James D. Triplin of Winston Salem, NC; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family is at the home.
