Sallie Coleman Obituary

Sallie Bell Etheredge Coleman

Sallie Bell Etheredge Coleman (86) was the first born of the late Sam (Bertha Nutridge) Etheredge, Sr.  She was the first-born grandchild on both sides of her paternal grandparents. She was the oldest of twelve children and was affectionately called “Sister” by her siblings.

Sallie was born in the Piney Woods section of Saluda County on November 14, 1935.  She departed this earthly journey on Christmas Eve, Friday, December 24, 2021 at PruittHealth Rehabilitation Center, Blythewood, SC.

Sallie’s Christian journey started at Branch Hill United Methodist Church in Saluda, SC, where she was baptized at the early age of twelve. While residing in New York, she faithfully attended Washington Temple Church of God in Christ. Later in life, Sallie visited Triumphant Ministries in Columbia, SC, with her sister, Elder Virginia Etheredge Bosket, where she earned the favor of God and was honored as the “Mother of the Church”. Throughout her life, Sallie continued a lifetime membership at Branch Hill United Methodist Church where she was a former Primary Sunday School Teacher, Usher, Choir Member, and Historian for the Church.

Sallie was educated in the Saluda County Public School System. She graduated from Rosenwald High School, Class of 1952. She temporarily relocated to Asheville, NC to pursue a career in home healthcare.

In 1961 she was united in Holy Matrimony to Maxie Lee Coleman, Jr., affectionately known as “M.L.”, who preceded her in death.

Later Sallie migrated to New York where she continued her nursing career in private home healthcare. She furthered her healthcare career at French Hospital, Manhattan, New York. After resettling in Saluda, SC, Sallie continued her career at Self Memorial Hospital, Greenwood, SC, Whitten Village Center, Laurens, SC, as well as additional private healthcare employment in Saluda, SC. Additionally, she served her community as a member of the Woman’s Home Aide Society #31.

Sallie shared precious memories of golden years with her classmate Hattie Clay Oliphant Suber, life-long friend Thelma Stewart Hackett, co-worker Mary Moss, and special friend Diane Farrow and son Frederick Farrow. Sallie thoroughly enjoyed collecting pictorial memories of family and friends, as she held much of the Etheredge family history. She was also a collector of precious souvenir items.
