Samuel Martin Etheredge
Spartanburg, SC: Samuel Martin Etheredge departed this life peacefully on Monday, September 13, 2021, in Spartanburg Regional Hospital.
He was the son of Rebecca Adams Etheredge and the late Willie Martin Etheredge, was born in Brooklyn, NY, on June 22, 1969. His family moved to Saluda, SC, a few years later, September 1973. While in high school, Sam played jv and varsity basketball, he was a member of the marching band, and even drove a school bus before graduating from Saluda High School in 1987. Sam furthered his education and gain an Associate’s Degree from Spartanburg Methodist College, a Bachelor’s Degree from Limestone College, and a Master’s from Webster University.
While making a home for himself in Spartanburg, SC, Sam worked multiple occupations and was a member of various organizations. He was employed with Spartanburg County DSS as well as a delivery driver for the Spartanburg Herald newspaper. He gained a black belt in martial arts before going on to teach women and kids karate classes. He was a member of Spartanburg’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) and Bare Bones Bible Study Group. He was also worked numerous years with St Luke’s Hospital as a discharge planner. In addition, he ran his own business, Samuel M. Etheredge, and Associates, teaching multiple classes, including parenting, domestic violence, and anger management. He also ran his leadership boot camps. He also worked as a counselor at Steps for Hope, an organization designed to help domestic violence and sexual assault victims. Along with all this, Sam also made time to work with the students at Dorman High School as a Youth Stop Counselor. In 2016 Sam gained his favorite title, grandfather, with the birth of his grandson Brendyn Thomas.
He is remembered today by his mother, Rebecca A. Etheredge of Saluda, SC,; daughter, Courtney K. Etheredge and grandson Brendyn Thomas of Spartanburg, SC; step-son Nolan Brown of Spartanburg, SC; step-daughters Jasmine and Natalie Jones, Spartanburg, SC; brothers Alexander Etheredge (Candice) of Saluda, SC , Charles Lewis of Tuscaloosa, AL, Travis Etheredge of Greenwood, SC, Jerry Kirk of Aiken, SC; sisters Laronda Glover (Damon) of Atlanta, GA, Camesha Rhodes of Aiken, SC, Nicole Rhodes o Atlanta, GA, Lillian Rhodes of Saluda, SC, Bridget Wertz of Saluda, SC; Aunt Janie Wiggins (Ashley) of Tarboro, NC; Uncle Leon Dash of Clearwater, Flordia; Niece Alexis Etheredge of Saluda, SC; nephews Roderick Etheredge of Saluda, SC and Xavier Glover of Atlanta, GA as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
A Celebration of his Life will be held on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Crossroad UMC, 1269 McCormick Highway, Saluda, SC. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Viewing will be held Saturday 1-7 p.m. at the funeral funeral home.
