Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) William "Bill" Harry
Stone Mountain, GA: Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) William “Bill” Harry was born on December 15, 1939, in Angie, Louisiana. He was the eighth offspring of twelve children born to the late Lottie Riley Harry and Jason Harry. William was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
William departed this life among family members on Monday, August 15, 2022, while hospitalized in Atlanta, Georgia. William gave his life to Christ at an early age at Wesley Ray United Methodist Church and remained faithful throughout his life. He spent his younger years learning how to farm, fishing, and hunting with his siblings.
William graduated from Wesley Ray High School in Angie, Louisiana. In service to his country, William was drafted into the U.S. Army at the age of 20. During his time in the service William obtained a Bachelors of Arts in Management in 1978. William served a combined total of 31 years, first as an enlisted service member and later as an officer, retiring in 1992. William continued being a service to others in his final employment with DeKalb County (Georgia) Government before fully retiring providing various housing assistance to low income applicants. William was also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. He was also an active member of Saint Philip AME Church up until his passing.
On December 27, 1980, William married Dorothy Deloris Goode of Ninety Six, South Carolina, later making Stone Mountain, Georgia their home after many military assignments elsewhere. From their union, William and Dorothy became the proud parents of two children, Travis Harry of Smyrna, Georgia, and Deanna Harry of Decatur, Georgia.
William is preceded in death by his parents Jason and Lottie Harry; his wife, Dorothy Harry; siblings, Tillie James Harry, Rovella Martin, Christine Magee, Laura Brown, Sylvester “Moses” Harry, Earnest Harry, Leroy Harry, and Cleotha Harry.
In passing to his Heavenly home, William leaves to cherish his fond and sweet memories to his two children Travis (Erica) Harry of Smyrna, Georgia, and Deanna Harry of Decatur, Georgia; two granddaughters Laila Naomi Harry and Aria Simone Harry; and his siblings Rosa Lee White, Earnestine (Willie) Bishop and Emma Harry of Angie, Louisiana; in-laws Thelma Harry, Charelene Harry, Gladys Harry, Rachel (Benjamin) Glover, Randolph (Thomasenia) Goode, Ezekiel Goode, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be Saturday, August 20, 2022 @ 1 p.m, at Pine Pleasant Baptist Church with pastor Reverend Willie Cannady - presiding and Reverend Lesley Mckinely - Eulogist and others assisting. The body will be placed in the church at Noon. Burial with Full Military Rites at the Cemetery.
Family Viewing will be Friday 1-2 and Public Viewing will be 2-6 p.m. at the funeral home.
